NOW-NYC advocates for the women and girls of New York.
We aim to defend reproductive rights, create economic equality, promote women’s political representation, and end discrimination and violence against women.
WE POWER ACTIVISM We are building a force of advocates to resist a national agenda that is targeting women’s hard-won rights. We provide the tools and resources to empower individuals to take action in their own communities and to give people a voice—whether it’s mobilizing survivors of sexual assault to speak out or training individuals how to hold elected leaders accountable.
WE CHANGE POLICY We led the fight for landmark legislation in our state to end the statute of limitations on rape, secure the first anti-human trafficking law, usher in no-fault divorce, end child marriage, and pass a Women’s Equality Act. We launched a campaign to raise awareness about drug-facilitated sexual assault – a crime which is on the rise and rarely prosecuted.
WE ELECT PRO-WOMEN’S RIGHTS LEADERSHIP We proactively support strong women’s rights candidates to ensure that the real needs of women and families are represented at all levels of government. Currently, men make up 81% of Congress and 72% of our New York State legislature. Governorships, a key pipeline to the White House, are held by only six women.
WE GIVE WOMEN A VOICE We launched Take Rape Seriously NOW, a campaign to secure justice for survivors, defend the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA), and hold elected leaders accountable. We are organizing Women’s Town Halls across the state to speak out against violence. We are collecting powerful testimony from organizations and survivors of sexual assault and/or domestic violence to make the undeniable case for preserving VAWA.
Women’s Justice NOW (formerly The NOW-NYC Service Fund) is our charitable partner organization, supporting our public education and outreach efforts and providing legal advocacy and referrals to women in need. Our team aids survivors in navigating the criminal justice system to get their cases investigated and to seek justice in the courts. We are leading the fight against drug-facilitated sexual assault – implementing our research into initiatives to train law enforcement officials and enable prosecutors to arrest and indict perpetrators.
We are expanding and protecting women’s reproductive freedom – not only by defending against continued attacks to restrict women’s access to abortion and contraception but by proactively lobbying for stronger laws and better health care delivery for the women of New York.
We are working to close the wage gap and end discrimination and sexual harassment in the workplace. We’re also empowering individuals to take charge of their careers, through our series of networking and educational events.
We are educating voters on the women’s rights credentials of local candidates and helping to elect strong women candidates. We’re also fostering leadership within our own ranks: our internship program and activist trainings enable community members to develop and sharpen their skills to organize and speak out for women’s rights.
We are strengthening our laws, holding our justice system accountable, and breaking down long-standing public attitudes and cultural beliefs that make it difficult for rape victims to come forward and for abusers to be prosecuted. We have led the way in securing landmark anti-violence legislation in New York State, including the removal of the statute of limitations on rape and passing our state’s first-ever anti-human trafficking law.
