Call on Dems to Protect Choice
Democrats Are Paving the Way for Anti-Choice Candidates
A shocking and unacceptable trend of supporting anti-choice candidates is emerging in the Democratic Party.
“There is not a litmus test for Democratic candidates,” declared Rep. Ben Ray Luján when talking about abortion rights this week in an interview with The Hill. Luján is the Chair of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) which fundraises for Democratic candidates for Congress and has made it clear that it is open to anti-choice candidates it sees as “electable” in traditionally red districts. Even House Minority Leader, Nancy Pelosi recently said that the Democratic Party is not the “rubber stamp” party on abortion.
This reflects an alarming trend: Democrats are on track to reverse a platform commitment to abortion access and comprehensive reproductive healthcare for women. We believe that only candidates who explicitly uphold these fundamental principles to protect abortion access and women’s comprehensive reproductive healthcare should be considered Democrats, because throwing women under the bus is definitely not a winning strategy.

Why you should call your elected officials
Calling your elected officials can seem intimidating, but it’s actually a lot easier than you think! Calling puts the pressure on your representative to act in real time. Why? Because representatives know that if they don’t act on the concerns of their constituents, it could impact their ability to get reelected. Calling your representative may not seem like that a big deal, but flooding the phone lines with your concerns is critical to how a democracy works.
Who do I call?
Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee:
House Minority Leader: Representative Nancy Pelosi (D-CA)
Democratic National Committee Chair: Tom Perez
Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee Chair: Representative Ben Ray Luján (D-NM)
What happens when you call?
Most likely an intern or receptionist will answer the phone.
You can then say the following script:
Hi, my name is ____________ and I’m a registered Democrat. I do not need a *response. I’m calling because I strongly believe that only candidates who explicitly uphold the fundamental principles to protect abortion access and women’s comprehensive reproductive healthcare should be considered Democrats. [If the issue has directly impacted you or those you know, now would be a good time to share a little bit about that.] Thank you for your hard work!
*If you do want a response the person on the phone will take down your contact information and enter you into the response database.
THAT’S IT! YOU DID IT! THANK YOU FOR ACTING NOW!
