End Child Marriage In New York State
Did you know there are loopholes in the law that allow 14-year-old girls to be married to adult men? Early, forced, and coerced marriages are happening right here in New York, and they have long-term, damaging outcomes–especially for young girls’ mental and physical health, education and job prospects. Child marriage is a form of child abuse that should be outlawed NOW.
On February 14, 2017, NOW-NYC president, Sonia Ossorio, went to Albany with Unchained at Last to protest the marriage age in New York, and call for legislation to end child marriage in our state. Now we need your voices to help us make a difference. Call your New York State Assemblymember NOW and let them know that child marriage has no place in New York. Find out who your representative is here, and use our script below to make the call.
End Child Marriage NOW Calling Script:
Hello, my name is_____ and I am a constituent living in _____. I am asking for you to support legislation that will end child marriage in our state, A.5524, sponsored by Assemblymember Amy Paulin. Our U.S. State Department recognizes child marriage as a human rights abuse, but we are allowing girls in our state to get married. This has to stop NOW.
