NOW-NYC Endorsed Candidates for NOW-NYS Office
I am honored to be running for president of NOW-NYS and believe that I can transform NOW into a competitive, thriving statewide organization that is on the cutting-edge of women’s rights and a home for women to unite, organize and create change to improve women’s lives individually and collectively. I want NOW to be for other women what it has been for me: A place of learning and a source of strength.
My goal as president is to harness our history to build an organization that can be as significant in the 21st century as it was in the last century. There is much work to be done: captivating the spirit of young women and making them into activists, building the foundation of our organization, recruiting new leaders, improving our financial outlook and raising our profile.
I believe I am the leader that can accomplish this task. At NOW-NYC, I have raised our visibility and our reputation, increased our operating budget exponentially, hired and led a team, spearheaded every NOW legislative victory in New York and created action campaigns that held business and government accountable for sidelining women and that were featured in Ms. Magazine, Feministing and many major newspapers. At NOW-NYC we’ve gotten results.
If you choose to elect me to lead NOW-NYS in the next two years, I promise to put the same dedication and passion into revitalizing our state organization, and my number one priority will be to support and bolster chapter leaders across the state.
Working with NOW-NYC for more than a decade, I have spent the last seven years as a key member of its leadership team. I have always been deeply committed to justice and equality, and I would bring that passion for advancing women’s rights along with the breadth of experiences I’ve had as a leader at NOW to my role as Executive VP. I have a strong record of being an effective implementer and team leader, including pulling people together to launch a volunteer clinic escort project and building an activist alliance to train young women leaders. My goals are two-fold: (1) Raise our profile and our power, by growing our political influence and launching timely and innovative campaigns that put our issues at the top of the agenda. (2) Re-imagine our beloved organization for tomorrow. I firmly believe that if we are to engage the next generation of activists, our organization has to put a thoughtful and strategic effort to adapt to “the NOW.” This means making it a priority to build our local chapters in every corner of the state, grow our membership, and bring NOW leaders together to share skills and knowledge to be most effective today.
I joined NOW NYC in 2012 as a member of the first Activist Alliance with the goal of using my skills and passion to advocate for gender equality. I believe that allowing women the space to tell their stories gives them agency in a world that does not privilege their voices. The past several years, as we have seen women’s rights systematically rolled back by many states, have taught me that we can never become complacent. We must work every day to make our voices heard. As an organization, NOW-NYS can play an important role in ensuring that the rights of women and girls are at the forefront but we need to get creative. As a non-profit development professional, I know what it takes to re-imagine an organization and how important it is to value our work enough to ask for support. In a complicated environment full of varying perspectives competing for resources, we can work together to become one, strong voice. As the Legislative Vice President, I will work to re-energize the chapters in order to ensure that the women and girls of New York have a voice in all state legislative matters.
