NOW New York Women’s Town Hall: Where’s Peter King?
Unsurprisingly, Representative Peter King did NOT show up.
Representative Peter King has evaded meeting with his constituents for the better part of a decade, opting most recently for a telephone Town Hall with previously selected questions (mostly from male supporters). On May 7, 2017, The National Organization for Women-New York, along with New York’s 2nd District Democrats, and Action Together Long Island, hosted a Women’s Town Hall so that women and their allies living in Representative King’s district could share their stories and ask questions. We invited Representative King to join our discussion on policies and issues that impact the lives of women and girls in New York, but he failed to attend the Town Hall.
However, the Long Island Town Hall was incredibly successful, and certainly sent a message to Representative King that his district is ready to hold him accountable for his inaction: 300 residents attended the Town Hall. We discussed issues including education, the environment, women’s healthcare, paid family leave, and political engagement. Additionally, since the Long Island Town Hall was part of a series of Town Halls that NOW New York is organizing across the state to protect the vital programs of the threatened Violence Against Women Act two survivors shared their stories of abuse, and testified to the critical importance of VAWA.
Congressman King has a terrible record when it comes to protecting and advocating for women’s rights: he voted against paid family leave, against the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, against funding family planning in US international aid, and against health coverage that provides abortion. He voted to allow coal companies to dump waste into our streams, he supports the ICE raids that are tearing families apart, and he voted yes on the American Health Care Act, which could leave 74,000 of his constituents without health insurance.
It is time to hold Representative King and other members of the House GOP accountable for their inaction on protecting women’s rights. Click here to find your representative’s information and call today—we must stop the American Health Care Act from taking away coverage from millions of Americans.
