NOW is committed to increasing women’s representation in Congress, where only 20% of seats are held by women. Candidates on our 2016 list are all passionate pro-choice advocates and fierce fighters for women’s rights and we are proud to endorse them.

Anna Throne-Holst (D) – Won
NY District 1: Suffolk County
Combatting discrimination against women in the workplace isn’t just a women’s issue, it’s an economic issue that affects every family’s pocketbook, and one that Anna is dedicated to improving. She plans to break down barriers such as the lack of access to affordable childcare and paid family leave that are leaving women and families behind in our economy. Anna Kaplan (D)
NY District 3: Nassau, Queens, and Suffolk counties
Anna is running for Congress in order to be “a voice for people who don’t have a voice.” After coming to the U.S. from Iran at 13 years of age, she has a unique perspective as an Iranian Jewish immigrant and can advocate effectively for immigrant women. Anna is the only female candidate in the district and supports easy accessibility to women’s reproductive rights, equal pay, ending violence against women, and increasing the number of women in high government offices. Nydia Velazquez (D) – Won
NY District 7: Kings, New York, and Queens counties
As a fighter for equal rights of the underrepresented and a proponent of economic opportunity for the working class and poor, Congresswoman Velázquez combines sensibility and compassion, as she works to encourage economic development, protect community health and the environment, combat crime and worker abuses, and secure access to affordable housing, quality education and health care for all New York City families. Jerrold Nadler (D) – Won
NY District 10: Kings County and New York County
As a senior Member of the House Judiciary Committee and a leader in the House Pro-Choice Caucus, he has often taken a central role in standing up to conservative attacks against every American’s right to make personal decisions about reproductive health, including devising the strategy to defeat countless anti-choice bills and carrying the movement’s signature piece of legislation – the Freedom of Choice Act. Carolyn Maloney (D) – Won
NY District 12: Kings, Queens, and New York counties
Congresswoman Maloney is the first woman to represent New York’s 12th Congressional District; the first woman to represent New York City’s 7th Council district (where she was the first woman to give birth while in office); and was the first woman to Chair the Joint Economic Committee, a House and Senate panel that examines and addresses the nation’s most pressing economic issues. Zephyr Teachout (D) – Won
NY District 19: Hudson Valley and the Catskills
Zephyr Teachout is a reform-minded leader who has never been afraid of standing up to special interests and the political establishment, even members of her own party. The New York Times calls her “a national expert on political corruption and an advocate of…transparency and political reform” on behalf of people whose voices have been drowned out by big corporations and powerful insiders. Colleen Deacon (D) – Won
NY District 24: Wayne, Cayuga, Onondaga, and Oswego counties
Colleen Deacon was waiting tables for a living when she became pregnant with her son–a job with no health insurance or maternity leave. Colleen knows firsthand how hard it is for families without health care or paid leave to make ends meet. In Congress, she will champion policies that actually work for New York families. Kathleen Rice (D)
NY District 4: Nassau County

Nita Lowey (D)
NY District 17: Rockland County and Westchester County
Congresswoman Lowey won widespread praise for passage of her legislation to ensure that insurance companies cover prescription contraceptives for federal employees.
