Astorino: New York Women Deserve an Apology
January 23, 2014 – NEW YORK, NY – In speaking about the abortion provision of the Women’s Equality Agenda, Westchester County Executive Rob Astorino demonstrated he is woefully uninformed about proposed reproductive healthcare legislation that has been under a microscope in Albany for nearly a year. We call on Mr. Astorino to apologize to the women of New York for his callous disregard for women’s health.
“If you’re going to talk about proposed legislation, the least you can do for the people you represent is get your facts straight,” said Sonia Ossorio, President of the National Organization for Women in New York City. “Using the same tired anti-choice strategy of scare tactics and misinformation isn’t going to go very far with the 80% of New York voters who understand this issue better than he does. Women’s health and pregnancy are not political footballs.”
“A simple update that brings our law in line with current federal law is not an expansion of abortion laws, rather it is a fundamental protection for New York women at a time when the very real threat to women’s health is being played out in states across the country. Governor Cuomo has consistently supported a woman’s right to compassionate reproductive healthcare because women’s health and lives matter,” Ossorio said.
