Crafters Join NOW in Refusing to Support Hobby Lobby
On March 25th the Supreme Court heard arguments in an important case that will determine whether your boss has the right to deny you comprehensive birth control coverage under the Affordable Care Act. Hobby Lobby, a craft store with nearly 600 locations nationwide, is leading this fight in the Supreme Court by trying to put the religious beliefs of bosses before the personal health care needs of workers.
The Affordable Care Act mandates that employers provide comprehensive birth control coverage for their employees, but Hobby Lobby and other businesses and organizations, deemed the “The Dirty 100” by NOW are suing to block parts of the mandate.
Contraception is fundamental health care. It supports and improves the health of women and children by enabling families to plan the spacing and timing of their pregnancies. It is also used to prevent ovarian cysts and endometrial and ovarian cancers. 99% of women in the U.S. have used birth control at some point in their lives. Businesses should not be able to use religion as an excuse to discriminate against women by providing substandard health care insurance and increasing women’s out-of-pocket expenses.
