Harvey Weinstein Turns Himself In To Police -- Statement from Sonia Ossorio, President of the National Organization for Women - NY

Press Releases / June 7, 2018

May 25, 2018 – Harvey Weinstein turned himself in to New York police this morning. He was charged with one count of first-degree rape, one count of third-degree rape, one count of criminal sexual act in the first degree.

The National Organization for Women-NYC applauds the Manhattan DA’s office and the NYPD for working tirelessly to investigate and build and strong case against serial abuser Harvey Weinstein. This case means a great deal as it is indicative of a bigger shift underway in public attitudes toward sexual assault and sexual harassment — predators are finally facing some real consequences.

“The women who came forward and spoke out about Harvey Weinstein are heroes,” said Sonia Ossorio, president of NOW-NYC.  “By speaking out they are inspiring others to also come forward and helping to transform our society.”

“The NYPD assigned its best detectives to an investigation that spanned 9 months, dozens of witnesses, and multiple cities. Prosecutors worked to secure the cooperation of survivors, and to analyze legal issues like the statute of limitations meticulously. This is what an effective criminal justice response to sexual assault looks like,” said Jane Manning, Director of Advocacy for NOW-NYC’s partner organization, Women’s Justice NOW.
