Resist NOW – Week of July 17
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
• Senate Still Set on Repealing Our Healthcare
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is now making Senators delay their August recess to get TrumpCare done. The latest version of the bill could be out as early as tomorrow. The changes being proposed, like Ted Cruz’s amendment, are meant to appease GOP hard-liners. Translation: this will not be good for women or anyone with pre-existing conditions.
- Civil Rights Enforcement at Schools & Universities Weakened
Under the direction of Betsy DeVos, the Department of Education is cutting back on its investigations into civil rights violations and has proposed terminating more than 40 staff positions from the Office for Civil Rights (OCR). This will have a direct impact on the enforcement of Title VI, protecting against racial discrimination, and Title IX, protecting against sex and gender discrimination at the nation’s public, federally-funded schools and universities.
• Addressing Gender-Based Violence on Campus Faces Setbacks
The OCR cuts are likely to reduce the number of investigations that can be done, even though there are currently 227 schools with Title IX complaints against them, and the list is growing. New York is no exception with 30 schools awaiting, or currently under, investigation.
- Undocumented Women More Vulnerable to Violence Under Trump Undocumented immigrant women are now having to choose between violence and deportation. Though undocumented victims and witnesses of crimes are legally protected from deportation, some federal immigration agents do not considercourthouses off limits. Women have been detained on their way to applying for orders of protection or to testify, both of which would qualify them for protections.
