Trump denigrates survivors, veterans & people of color, as election nears

SEPTEMBER EDITION

With less than 50 days until the Election, Trump continues to demonstrate just how dangerously unfit he is for the job of President. From purposefully downplaying the coronavirus pandemic that has now killed almost 200,000 Americans to encouraging the right-wing conspiracy theory QAnon to defending the gunman who killed two anti-racism protestors, he is sowing discord and endangering lives in unprecedented ways.

Here’s the latest update on groups Trump has mocked, disrespected, or belittled in recent days:

  • Survivors — E. Jean Carroll, is suing Trump for defamation after he denied her allegations of rape. Now the U.S. Department of Justice is moving to take responsibility for Trump’s defense in court. The DOJ is claiming that Trump’s remarks, which include saying he could not have raped Carroll because she is “not my type,” were made under his official capacity as president. The move, if successful, would allow Trump to use government resources — taxpayer money — to evade accountability for his private misconduct.
  • Veterans — New reports this month, including reporting by Fox News, show just how deep Trump’s disparagement of the military goes. He has repeatedly called Americans who died in war “losers” and “suckers,” including thousands of Marines who died in a critical World War I battle. He doesn’t understand why “smart” people would join the military, and he has asked for wounded veterans to be excluded from military parades because “nobody wants to see” amputees.
  • People of Color — Just last month he encouraged a birther conspiracy theory about Kamala Harris, the first Black and first Indian-American woman to be on a major party ticket. And when asked by Bob Woodward if he felt he had a responsibility to understand the “pain and anger” of Black people, especially as a privileged white man, Trump scoffed, “No. You really drank the Kool-Aid, didn’t you? Just listen to you. Wow. No, I don’t feel that at all.”

Nothing threatens our rights and our democracy more than another four years of Donald Trump in the White House.

SUMMER EDITION

“…it’s fading away, it’s going to fade away.”

This is what Trump said about the coronavirus, and it explains a lot about the lack of a data-driven, coordinated, federal response that has now put our country in the position of being unable to safely open schools and the economy fully this fall. From contradicting the CDC, to undermining the nation’s top infectious disease expert, to denying the reality that cases are rising whether they are confirmed by tests or not, Trump’s failure to take full responsibility has resulted in making the U.S. the leader in the number of confirmed cases and deaths from the virus. Here’s a full rundown.

“a symbol of hate.”

This is what Trump called the painting of the words “Black Lives Matter” on Fifth Avenue in New York City. While Trump has defended the flying of the Confederate flag as “freedom of speech,” he is rejecting the call for racial justice and equality for Black communities and is instead stoking division in the aftermath of George Floyd’s murder.

“…I’m announcing a surge of federal law enforcement into American communities…”

At Trump’s direction, federal agents trained for Border Patrol where deployed to Portland where they detained protesters in unmarked vehicles, unleashed tear gas on them, and in some cases beat or shot rubber bullets at protesters, severely injuring a number of them. Sending federal troops into what Trump has labeled “liberal cities” is an unconstitutional use of federal force against American citizens that is leading to an escalation of violence that city after city is rejecting.

Trump’s lies prove deadly in coronavirus pandemic

MARCH AND APRIL EDITION

Trump’s handling of the coronavirus pandemic has been disastrous, and he is now using his daily coronavirus briefings to defend himself instead of giving the American people the information they need to stay safe.

Over the course of this crisis, Trump has:

  • Ignored warnings from experts and waited for weeks before taking action.
  • Lied to the American people about the nature and severity of COVID-19, the availability of testing, and about treatments and vaccines.
  • Refused to admit that the shuttering of the White House pandemic preparedness team severely limited our nation’s ability to mount a rapid response to protect the public.
  • Failed to initiate any coordinated federal response to the pandemic, including forcing states to compete for protective equipment and ventilators, withholding the federal stockpile of ventilators from states in dire need, and refusing to ramp up a legitimate national testing effort.
  • Refused to lead by example and ignored CDC recommendations to wear a face mask.
  • Contradicted the experts in his administration repeatedly, even moments after they provided key scientific and medical information the public needs to stay safe.
  • Moved to defund the World Health Organization in the midst of a global health crisis
  • Fueled bigotry against Asian Americans by using racist terms to describe the coronavirus.
  • Fired key staff in retaliation against criticism, including Michael Atkinson, Inspector General of the Intelligence Community, and the Pandemic Inspector General, Glenn Fine, who was responsible for oversight of the $2 trillion coronavirus package.

“YOU’D NEVER HAVE A REPUBLICAN ELECTED AGAIN.” – Trump’s reaction to expanding voter access

And if all of this wasn’t bad enough, Trump is now using the crisis to suppress voters – his primary re-election strategy. As Democrats lead the push for mail-in ballots, same day registration, and early voting as part of the coronavirus stimulus package, Trump said — on the record — that if we ever passed legislation that enabled such levels of voting, “…you’d never have a Republican elected in this country again.”

Trump has NOT been acquitted by the people!

FEBRUARY EDITION

The Impeachment Trial is over, and as expected, 52 Senators voted to acquit the president, despite his demonstrated abuse of power: asking a foreign government to help his re-election.

While the trial was underway:

  • The Supreme Court upheld Trump’s “public charge” rule – which would deny green cards to immigrants who utilize public assistance such as food stamps or Medicaid, forcing immigrant families to choose between a path to citizenship and basic needs.
  • Trump expanded his “Muslim Ban” to six additional countries, including Nigeria – Africa’s most populous country and an economic force.
  • Trump signed the largest rollback of the Clean Water Act since its passage in 1972, removing federal protections for streams and roughly half the country’s wetlands.

Trump claimed during his State of the Union address that he would protect patients with pre-existing conditions, despite the fact that his administration has repeatedly tried to dismantle the Affordable Care Act and its protections. Get all the facts on #SOTU2020.

Everything you need for tonight’s #DemDebate

JANUARY EDITION

We’re ready to roll up our sleeves and get to work in 2020 to continue our momentum from 2019

  • Nationwide, there are 7 million youth of color who will have turned 18 since the last presidential election.
  • Democrats have been making critical progress: from Stacey Abrams’ historic 1.9 million votes to sweeping the Virginia state legislature late last year to electing the most diverse Congress in history in the midterms.
  • Since the last debate the House has voted to impeach Trump. Speaker Pelosi will lead a vote in the House tomorrow to send the articles of impeachment to the Senate.

A LOT of other things have happened, too:

  • Trump ordered an airstrike within the first days of the new year that brought the U.S. and Iran to the brink of war.
  • 207 members of congress signed an amicus brief asking the U.S. Supreme Court to reconsider Roe v. Wade. Check out this digital map to see what happens without Roe.
  • Trump’s administration is expected to expand the travel ban to 7 new countries.
  • Trump’s new rule for recipients of the food stamps program (SNAP) will cut off 700,000 people from getting the assistance they need.

Quick update on the state of reproductive rights for 2020

  • The Supreme Court is set to hear its first abortion case on March 4th, following the addition of Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh to the Court.
  • Nationally, abortion rights advocates are anticipating a new slate of abortion bans and other restrictive pieces of legislation and ballot initiatives.
  • Trump will continue his misinformation campaign to stigmatize abortion and drive opposition.

Will it be a Post-Impeachment #DemDebate?

DECEMBER EDITION

The biggest news of the day is that the House Judiciary Committee approved articles of impeachment against Trump. The House is set to vote on impeachment tomorrow, Wednesday, December 18th.

A LOT of other things have happened since the last debate, too:

  • Trump issued new rules that will result in 688,000 people losing access to food stamps, known as Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits. Combined with other changes, millions of families could lose or see reduced benefits under Trump.
  • Trump defied military leaders to defend Navy SEAL Edward Gallagher, who faced trial for war crimes. This shouldn’t come as a complete surprise, since Trump is on the record questioning the Geneva Conventions and supporting forms of torture for interrogation.
  • Trump took time from his schedule to mock and belittle 16-year-old climate activist, Greta Thunberg, after she was named person of the year by TIME magazine.

Get your Trump talking points for Turkey Day!

THANKSGIVING EDITION

The impeachment inquiry is underway, but the anti-impeachment spin is “so what?!” We’ve got you. Here’s your cheat sheet with the facts about how Trump’s actions were both politically motivated and an abuse of power.

Four questions for Trump since he claims he was just “rooting out corruption” in Ukraine:

  1. Why did multiple career career civil servants (serving both Republican and Democratic administrations) testify that Trump never cared about genuinely addressing corruption?
  2. Why did Giuliani say publicly that he was seeking investigations damaging to Trump’s political opponents?
  3. Why did Sondland testify that Trump and Giuliani didn’t actually ask him to demand that the Ukrainians open any real investigations to root out corruption—just that they announce publicly that there would be investigations?
  4. Why did Trump openly ask China to investigate the Bidens, saying “if they don’t do what we want, we have tremendous power”?

And to be clear….

  • Trump knew about the whistleblower complaint in August. It was after he knew of the complaint that he released military aid and claimed he didn’t want anything from Ukraine. That’s right – only after he knew about the complaint.
  • No, Ukraine did not hack the Democratic National Committee servers – Russia did. This was the conclusion of independent investigations by Special Counsel Robert Mueller, the F.B.I., AND bipartisan Congressional reports. Take a 6-minute look at the evidence of Russian interference.
  • The national debt has hit an all-time high of $23 trillion on Trump’s watch.  This is despite his promise to actually wipe out the national debt. Trump’s huge corporate tax cuts didn’t turn into higher wages and benefits for workers. But it did put us deeper into debt than at any time in history.
  • Hundreds of emails show Stephen Miller’s irrefutable link to white nationalism. The longest-serving member of Trump’s inner circle, Miller is a scholar of virulent racism, but he still has a seat at the table advising Trump and drafting US policy.

Domestic Violence Awareness Month

OCTOBER EDITION

Trump is a serial sexual predator who upholds dated gender roles and a sexist view of manhood.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness month, but we have a president who has gone on the record, time after time, to defend perpetrators of domestic violence and abuse:

  • During the fight to confirm Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court, Trump said,
“It is a very scary time for young men in America.”
  • Trump defended campaign manager Corey Lewandowski after he violently grabbed a woman reporter at an event.
  • Trump endorsed child abuser Roy Moore for Senate.
  • Trump spoke supportively of former White House aide Rob Porter even after he resigned in the face of domestic violence allegations from two ex-wives.
  • Trump defended the late Roger Ailes, the ousted CEO of Fox News who sexually harassed at least twenty women.
  • At least two-dozen women with credible sexual assault or harassment allegations against Trump have come forward, yet he continues to escape culpability.
