What Are Deepfakes?

Deepfakes are manufactured media made by Artificial Intelligence (AI) and deep learning algorithms that manipulate existing audio, video, or images to make people appear to say or do things that they never actually did. Not only is this a way to spread misinformation or scam people, but deepfakes are also being weaponized against women through sexually explicit media. This represents a serious violation of women’s dignity and respect.

Know Your Rights

The TAKE IT DOWN Act, the first federal legislation to specifically address the dangers of AI-generated deepfakes, was signed into law in 2025. This landmark law makes it a federal crime to threaten or knowingly share non-consensual intimate images and requires websites and online platforms to remove them within 48 hours of a survivor’s verified request.
