Joe Biden wins presidency and Kamala Harris will become the first woman Vice President of the United States

Press Releases / November 9, 2020

November 9, 2020 — New York, NY — Hope has been restored. Joe Biden will be the next President of the United States, winning the most votes for a ticket in the nation’s history and leading in the popular vote by more than four million votes to date. Voters also made history, by electing the first Black, South Asian, and woman Vice President of the United States, Kamala Harris. NOW-NY, with its members and volunteers, through education, outreach, phone calls, and hard work, Grabbed Trump by the Ballot and helped win a monumental victory to restore democracy and the values of equality and justice for all people.

“There is no question that this week has been difficult, as we faced even more uncertainty in a year of uncertainty and struggle. But there is an undeniable truth: our core values remain steadfast as do those of the more than 75 million Americans who cast their votes for democracy, justice, science, facts, and dignity,” said Sonia Ossorio, President of the National Organization for Women – New York.

In the past four years, record numbers of women have been elected to Congress and local offices; a new reserve of energy and political engagement has been built; and women have never stopped fighting for justice. “It is women – it is Black women and women of color – who have paved the way forward. If these four years have taught us anything, it’s that we all have power in our own lives and communities and families. Political power starts and ends with each one of us,” Ossorio said.

NOW-NY looks forward to a brighter feminist future, one that focuses on everyone. “We are energized to continue finding solutions for women and families — from access to abortion, affordable healthcare, and quality childcare to securing living wages and fair pay to ending violence and discrimination,” Ossorio said. This is the work the National Organization for Women has been doing for more than fifty years, and what it will continue to do, no matter what. “Next up in New York City, we’ll be shaping the debate in city elections and making sure women’s voices are front and center on the issues affecting our communities.”

NOW-NYC ignites change for the women and girls of New York. We advance laws, promote women in politics, fight for reproductive justice, challenge discrimination and violence against women, and act NOW.
