NOW-NYC Calls on Trump Administration to have ICE Stand Down after Second Fatality
New York, NY – NOW-NYC condemns the reckless and brutal tactics carried out by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency on the streets of Minneapolis that have led to numerous shootings and the shooting death of Alex Pretti, an ICU nurse and Renee Good, a mother of three.
Our hearts are with the families and loved ones of Alex and Renee who are enduring unimaginable loss and grief, deepened by the government’s portrayal of them as domestic terrorists and violent individuals.
According to witness accounts and reports, Mr. Pretti had not drawn his weapon, and his weapon had been taken from him before he was shot. Ms. Good is seen on video driving away from an ICE agent when she was shot in the face. The killing of these two 37-year-old U.S. citizens demands an immediate independent investigation, and full accountability.
This level of force must not be normalized. History shows us that militarized community law enforcement has repeatedly led to suppression, political crackdowns and the erosion of democratic norms, clearing the path for authoritarianism and the widespread targeting of civilians, and violence against those deemed “other.”
We stand in solidarity with the people of Minneapolis and Mayor Jacob Frey who are asking for non-violence, an end to terror and destabilization of their neighborhoods and lives.
NOW-NYC is calling on the Trump Administration to pull back ICE operations as currently organized and for lawmakers to halt any further funding for ICE until new leadership is installed with a commitment to non-violence, its tactics are demonstrably changed and an independent investigation is launched.
