Repeal the #WalkingWhileTrans Law in New York State

Press Releases / January 27, 2021

January 27, 2021 – New York, NY – It’s time to change our discriminatory state laws that harm women and LGBTQ individuals. We support the repeal of “loitering for the purpose of prostitution” law, which has resulted in unjust police profiling, arrests, harassment and violence and disproportionately targets women of color and the transgender community.

“This archaic and vague law must be stricken from the penal code to prevent trans people, women and any other New Yorker from being profiled simply for how they are dressed, how they identify, or where they stand,” said Sonia Ossorio, president of the National Organization for Women of New York.
“Assemblymember Amy Paulin has led this charge and her steadfast advocacy to end this abusive practice and right this wrong is a testament to her skill as a legislator and her commitment to human rights.”

NOW-NYC ignites change for the women and girls of New York. We advance laws, promote women in politics, fight for reproductive justice, challenge discrimination and violence against women, and act NOW.
