New York State Attorney General’s Resignation Speaks to the Power of #MeToo

Asks That New York Leaders to Appoint a Women’s Rights A.G.
May 8, 2018 – NOW New York is calling for an independent investigation to examine the allegations against Eric Schneiderman and hold him fully accountable to the law. Furthermore, the New York State legislature has a responsibility to appoint a champion of women’s rights to the position of A.G. and should make it a priority to consider strong women candidates.
“The fact that Eric Schneiderman resigned within hours of the credible allegations against him demonstrates the strength of the public reckoning we are in the midst of – an era of unchecked misogyny is ending. Abusive men like Eric Schneiderman will be held accountable. We owe a debt of gratitude to the courageous women who came forward to expose him.” said Sonia Ossorio, President of the National Organization for Women New York.
In the immediate wake of explosive reports of intimate partner violence perpetrated by Eric Schneiderman, NOW-NY called for the A.G. to step down. It was untenable that he would continue to lead an office charged with protecting the rights of New Yorkers while violating the human rights of women in his own life.
Ossorio said, “We need an attorney general who will not only fight for women in public but will uphold the law and the values of justice and equality in every realm of their life.”
