NOW-NY Calls on Governor to Recognize Home Healthcare Workers as Essential Workers

NOW-NY joined Ain't I A Woman? Campaign to demand the Governor recognize home healthcare workers as essential workers. “These are women taking care of our most vulnerable,” said Sonia Ossorio, President of NOW New York State. The demands included access to personal protective equipment, fair pay, and an end to 24hr shifts, to keep themselves healthy and their patients safe.

Supreme Court Rules Employers Can Deny Birth Control Coverage

On Wednesday, July 8th, the Supreme Court ruled 7-2 that employers with religious or moral objections to birth control can deny coverage to their employees. “The Affordable Care Act recognized that preventing unwanted pregnancy gives women power over their lives and actually reduces the number of abortions. Stripping thousands upon thousands of women of this benefit is not only supremely counterproductive, it's a women-hating policy,” said Sonia Ossorio, President of NOW New York.

Women's Movement Brief Filed in Support of ERA

The battle for the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) entered another phase today as 52 prominent women’s rights and social justice groups across the country filed an amicus curiae brief opposing the efforts of the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) to stop the Equal Rights Amendment following its ratification by Nevada, Illinois and Virginia – the final three of the thirty-eight states required for an amendment to the Constitution.

Supreme Court Strikes Down Louisiana Abortion Restrictions

The Supreme Court struck down a restrictive Louisiana law requiring abortion providers to have admitting privileges at local hospitals that would have resulted in the shuttering of all but one abortion clinic in the entire state. “Today’s decision will save women’s lives,” said Sonia Ossorio, President of NOW - New York.
