Step 1: Register to Vote

Check Your Status

Check your registration status and make sure you are registered to vote in the upcoming election. If you have recently moved to New York, or it’s been a while since you last voted, it’s a good reason to check your voter registration status:

Register to Vote by May 28th

If you are not yet registered to vote, please note the deadline to be eligible for this June’s primary is rapidly approaching. Your voter registration application must be received (in-person or online application) or postmarked (mail application) by May 28th. Don’t wait until the last minute!

Three Ways to Register in NY

  1. Online. You can register online if you have a NYS driver license, permit, or non-driver ID card and a Social Security number. These are not required for registration via mail or in-person.
  2. By Mail. Get the form online or call 1-800-FOR-VOTE to have the form sent to you.
  3. In Person. You can register in person at your county board of elections, at any New York State Agency-Based voter registration center, or at the Department of Motor Vehicles.

Not in New York? Find the information for voting in your state.

College Students

  • College students can register to vote at either their campus address or permanent/home address. You can only be registered and vote in one location.
  • If you’re planning to register at your permanent address make sure to request an absentee ballot.
